On August 5, 2024, the Center for Migrant Advocacy (CMA) took a significant step forward in its mission to support Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families. Through a series of key meetings and courtesy calls, CMA representatives from GoJust and OPIC projects engaged in productive discussions with Ms. Ma. Lourdes V. Reyes, Regional Director of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Region III, and Ms. Maria Luisa Pangilinan, Provincial PESO Manager of Nueva Ecija, along with their staff. These initiatives marked an important step in fostering collaboration and enhancing support systems for the OFW community.
The back-to-back courtesy calls and meetings highlighted CMA's commitment to collaborative
efforts in supporting OFWs and their families. The discussions focused on three key areas:
1. Strengthening Existing Partnerships: CMA and OWWA Region III revisited the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed in 2023, ensuring continued alignment and effectiveness in supporting OFW families. This ongoing collaboration reflects a shared commitment to providing essential resources and support.
2. Empowering Communities Through Capacity Building: A significant part of the dialogue revolved around CMA’s initiatives in capacity building. The organization highlighted its comprehensive training programs for OFW Family Circles (OFCs) and Local Government Units (LGUs). These trainings cover crucial areas such as migrants' rights, access to justice, migration governance, gender and migration, and safe and fair migration. By equipping community-based organizations and local governments with knowledge and skills, CMA aims to enhance the effectiveness of government programs and services for OFWs.
3. Introduction of New Research on Sustainable Green Reintegration: In partnership with the Olof Palmes Internationella Center (OPIC), CMA introduced its new research project titled Roots and Routes: A Case Study of the Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) Family Circles (OFCs) in Laur, Nueva Ecija and their Journey towards a Sustainable Green Reintegration. This study aims to address the challenges and opportunities faced by OFW families in Nueva Ecija, with a focus on sustainable and green reintegration practices. The research reflects CMA’s commitment to innovative solutions and sustainable development, striving to enhance the reintegration process for OFW families and promote environmentally responsible practices.
These meetings signify a major advancement in CMA’s ongoing efforts to improve the lives of OFWs and their families. Through our partnership with the Olof Palmes Internationella Center, Governance in Justice, collaboration with other stakeholders, capacity-building initiatives, and innovative research, CMA is committed to fostering a more just and equitable future for Filipinos both locally and abroad.
