BASTA! Run Against Torture XIV: Solidarity for Human Rights

On June 26, the Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP), the Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines (CHRP), and the United Against Torture Coalition-Philippines (UATC-Philippines) joined forces with representatives of the Philippine government for the 'Basta! Run Against Torture (BRAT) XIV' in Quezon City. This event marked the UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, aiming to raise awareness and contribute to the global campaign against torture.
In a significant display of unity, over 400 participants, including representatives from the CHR, Philippine National Police Academy, Department of Justice, Department of Interior and Local Government, Quezon City local government, and various civil society organizations, participated in the run.
The event featured the unfurling of a large poster with the message “Freedom from Torture Is Our Right” near the Philcoa footbridge, captured by drone shots. The program ran from 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM, starting with registration at 5:30 AM and included various activities such as the actual run, distribution of food and drinks, delivery of statements of commitment, and a ceremonial signing for stakeholders.
Notable speakers included Atty. Faydah M. Dumarpa, Focal Commissioner of CHR for Freedom from torture, Atty. Beda A. Epres, Commissioner of the CHR, and USec. Serafin P. Barretto, Jr. of the Department of Interior and Local Government, among others. The event aimed to reaffirm the commitment to human rights and the prevention of torture worldwide.
