The Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates (PAHRA) welcomes the proposal for a ₱200 daily minimum wage increase, recognizing it as a necessary step toward alleviating the economic hardships faced by Filipino workers. However, PAHRA challenges House Speaker Martin Romualdez to ensure the immediate passage of this bill, with the same urgency Congress applies to laws that benefit the powerful.
"If Congress can swiftly approve measures that serve its own interests, then surely it can move just as fast on a wage hike that directly benefits workers," said Egay Cabalitan, PAHRA Secretary-General. "A ₱200 increase is a much-needed relief, but it’s long overdue. We urge Speaker Romualdez to prove that Congress prioritizes the people’s welfare by ensuring the immediate passage of this pro-worker bill."
PAHRA stresses that wage hikes should not be treated as mere handouts but as a fundamental right of workers who drive the country’s economy. The longer Congress stalls its passage, the more Filipino families suffer from inadequate wages that fail to cover even their most basic needs. Lawmakers must act with urgency and commitment to uplift the working class, rather than treat their struggles as an afterthought.
"Workers cannot wait any longer. Every day that Congress delays this bill, millions of Filipinos struggle to put food on the table," he added.
PAHRA remains steadfast in its call for fair wages and economic justice. A genuine commitment to workers’ rights means ensuring that wage policies reflect the rising cost of living and provide dignity to every Filipino worker. The passage of this bill should not be a matter of political convenience but a demonstration of Congress’ duty to serve the people. PAHRA urges lawmakers to act now—because every day of inaction is another day of struggle for millions of Filipino families.
